The Abyss Movie (No, not that one)
I haven’t posted anything in a long time. Figured I needed to post something about the movie The Abyss. No, not that one, the Swedish one from 2023 on Netflix. It’s about a big mine that is about to collapse and destroy the entire town.
At the halfway point, I had to turn it off as it is among the worst movies I have ever seen.
It checks most, if not all the woke check boxes.
- It has a strong independent female lead. Except she’s not exactly independent. She’s divorcing her husband except she hasn’t signed the divorce papers for six months. The movie directly states it doesn’t matter if she signs the papers or not.
- She’s fucking another guy with a darker skin tone and the movie directly states it doesn’t matter that she’s fucking him even though she’s married.
- The daughter is in a lesbian relationship.
It’s also extremely formulaic. The halfway point is where it goes completely off the rails. Trapped in the mine, the two men (the existing husband and some rando) start acting like extreme retards and the two strong independent women have to constantly console them. The cringe is shocking. It also takes until that point for the daughter to find that the son is trapped in a sinkhole/cavern, something the audience knows from the very beginning of the movie.
Does the town get swallowed up by the mine like the movie seems to promise? I have no idea because it’s all extreme character-driven cringe up to that point. If you watch it, you’ll wonder who the fuck wrote this shit? But you know the answer.
